The increased
proliferation of charities in Canada means that more charities will be
competing for the same resources. To
ensure that enough resources are available to them for them to fulfil their
missions, they will have to be strategic in attracting new sources of funding
and in maintaining existing relationships.
As you attempt to
attract and retain donors for your charity, bear in mind that if donors are not
interested in your charity's cause, they will not support it. In addition, if they are not approached in
the right way or if they did not appreciate the treatment they received from
your charity, they are not likely to become donors or to continue to donate.
You should therefore
ensure that you know your donor or prospect well, regardless of whether the
donor or prospect is an individual donor or a corporation or foundation. It is also important to ensure that your
charity's cause matches the donor's interests.
If the donor is interested in your charity's cause and is treated well,
it is more likely that that donor will give and keep on giving.
Regardless of where the
gift comes from, it is a human being who will be responsible for making the
donation. If the donor is an
institution, remember that it is not the corporation or the foundation that
will actually make the donation, but rather, an individual from the institution
who will make the gift.
To ensure that donations
match interests and capacity to give, your charity should thoroughly research
the donor or prospect. Research should involve
identifying and qualifying donors based on capacity (ability), inclination
(motivation), and accessibility (the person's contacts). It is only after identifying and qualifying
donors and prospects that appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies
that are unique to each donor or prospect can be developed.
With the right approach,
prospects and donors will support your charity's cause and donate even more to
it in the future.
The following free
electronic sources should assist your charity in researching prospects and
donors:
